No seam down the middle.
108" wide 100% cotton quilting fabric, 3 yard cut, in a mottled black tonal that shifts from charcoal to soft grey.
At 108 inches across, this single piece backs a queen size quilt on its own. Nothing to join, nothing to line up, nothing running across the back of your work.
Standard quilting cotton comes off the bolt at 44 or 45 inches wide. To back anything bigger than a lap quilt with it, you buy two lengths, join them, match the pattern, press the seam open, and then hope it lands somewhere your longarm will forgive. This piece is 108 inches in both directions, which is the equivalent of 7.2 yards of regular width fabric, in one uncut piece.
About this black
It is not a flat black. The color moves across the cloth: charcoal, soft grey, deep near black, shifting the way weather shifts.
This is the back for a top that is already loud: bright batiks, saturated solids, jewel tones that would look thin against something pale. It is the back for a Christmas quilt in deep reds and greens, where black holds the color instead of washing it out. It is the back for a modern top with a lot of negative space, where black turns the whole thing graphic. And it is the one for a quilt that will be used hard, on a couch, by people with feet and coffee.
Solid black is unforgiving, and every line of quilting reads as a hard pale scratch across it. Here the stitching has somewhere to sit, and the back of your quilt looks finished rather than exposed.
How much it covers
108 inches in both directions backs a quilt top up to roughly 92 by 92 inches with generous allowance all round for a longarm. That covers most throw, twin and queen tops in one seamless piece.
For a king, you will want two. One seam instead of three or four, and enough left over to back a throw, line a bag, or start something else entirely.
One honest note about the color
Black is the hardest color there is to judge on a screen. Order it, unwrap it, and hold it against your quilt top in daylight before you commit to anything. If it is not the one, you have sixty days to tell us and we refund every cent, return shipping included, no restocking fee.
