Twenty four years of quilting, and she still could not get one quilt cut out on a single blade. That is not Dianne. There are two separate things making a rotary cut harder than it needs to be, and almost every quilter only ever fixes one of them.

Two kinds of effort, and only one of them is the blade

The first one everybody knows about. A blade that is not sharp enough stops cutting and starts pushing the fabric ahead of it. It skips a thread here and two there, you go back over the same line, and you press harder to make up the difference. That costs you accuracy before it costs you anything else.

The second one almost nobody thinks about, and it is the reason a brand new blade can still feel like work. Most rotary cutters turn the blade against a screw and a spring, a design that has barely changed in three decades. The blade rotates against friction. It is a small resistance, but you fight it on every inch of every cut, and it is still there on the day you fit a fresh blade.

This is why the blades and the cutter come together. The titanium blades deal with the edge. Here is something the big brands would rather not say out loud. Most popular rotary cutters do not ship with the highest quality blades attached. The cutter is the thing you buy once. The blade is where the cost is hidden, and it is hidden in a purchase you make again and again for years.

Our 45mm blades are made from SKS-7 tungsten steel with a titanium coating. The titanium does two specific things: it hardens the cutting edge and it resists corrosion. A harder edge does not deform under the load of a thick stack, and that is what decides whether the bottom layer gets cut or dragged.

Because a blade rarely fails all at once. It skips. One uncut thread on the third layer, two on the fourth, and suddenly you are pulling the ruler back and recutting an edge that was supposed to be finished.
