The tools that cut straight, and something worth cutting.
Buying a good ruler and a good cutter is the easy part. What usually happens next is that they sit in the drawer for a fortnight, because starting means choosing fabric, and choosing fabric means a trip to the shop and a decision you are not sure about yet. This combo removes that step. The cutting kit arrives with the fabric already chosen, already cut, already coordinated, so the first thing you do with a new ruler is use it.
The cutting side
The Quilter's Combo from TrueCut is a precision cutting kit rather than three tools in a bag. The ruler track and the cutter guide interlock, which is what stops the ruler creeping mid-cut and taking a quarter inch of accuracy with it. You get the My Comfort Cutter at 45mm, shaped for long sessions rather than short ones, the 6½" x 24½" TrueCut ruler with the patented Ruler Track system, and a set of TrueGrips non-slip adhesive strips.
-
Interlocking track and guide so that the blade follows the ruler instead of wandering off it.
-
No ruler slippage so that the last strip in the stack measures the same as the first.
-
Ergonomic 45mm cutter so that a long cutting session does not end in a sore hand.
-
TrueGrips included so that the ruler holds even on a single layer of cotton.
The fabric side
Fourteen prints, four squares of each, fifty six squares in the bundle. Four of the same print is the number I like best in a small piece, because it lets a print come back two or three times across the work and look like a decision rather than a leftover.
The colours are warm and soft at the same time. Apricot and tangerine, lavender and deeper purple, blush and rose pink, olive and sage green, with gold and plum in the smaller marks and ivory running underneath all of it. There are watercolour florals with tulips and irises drawn loosely on a pale ground, two packed silhouette florals in orange and in pink, a bed of purple mums, orange chrysanthemums on blush, and a fine stem print of coral blossom on cream. The quiet ones do the work in between: a sage crosshatch, a lavender texture flecked with tiny white dots, an apricot linen look weave, and two near solids in ivory and warm sand. One print breaks the pattern in the best way, a scatter of mosaic circles built from small painted dashes in every colour the bundle owns.
The squares come from the Flourish Collection by FIGO Fabrics, curated and cut here rather than bought in as a standard manufacturer pack. It is the same family of fabrics behind our Meadowlands and Garden Gate quilt kits, so you can recreate the look of either one or go somewhere else entirely with it.
What to make with it. Charm squares are the friendliest way into patchwork, so I would start simple and let the prints do the talking. A four patch, a nine patch, a field of pinwheels, or a straight setting with the two near solids used as breathing room between the florals. If a whole quilt is not what your week looks like, a table runner or a set of placemats uses these beautifully and finishes fast, and a single pieced pillow cover is a Saturday. Mug rugs and pincushions are what I make with the last few squares.
One note on contrast. These prints run light and warm, which is lovely and also means they want somewhere to sit. A deep plum, olive or navy solid as sashing or binding gives the florals an edge to push against. If you would rather keep the whole thing airy, use the ivory and the sand as your background and let it stay soft.
