At 108 inches across, this single piece backs a queen size quilt on its own. Nothing to join, nothing to line up, nothing running across the back of your work.
Standard quilting cotton comes off the bolt at 44 or 45 inches wide. To back anything bigger than a lap quilt with it, you buy two lengths, join them, match the pattern, press the seam open, and then hope it lands somewhere your longarm will forgive. This piece is 108 inches in both directions, which is the equivalent of 7.2 yards of regular width fabric, in one uncut piece.
About this cream
It is a warm white rather than a bright one. Pale ivory where the dye sat lightest, a touch deeper in the folds, moving softly across the cloth so that nothing ever reads flat.
This is the back for a hand quilted top, where the stitches are meant to be seen but softly. On a stark white the same stitching reads as a hard line; here it settles into the cloth and looks like part of it. It is the back for a soft low contrast quilt, the pastels and dusty pinks and pale blues, where anything darker would shadow through the batting and dull everything above it. It is the back for a baby quilt, and for a wedding quilt, where cream carries the occasion without the coldness of pure white.
It is also the honest neutral. A true white is a decision, and it shows every mark that thirty years of use will put on a quilt. Cream forgives the same marks and keeps looking like it was meant to be that color.
How much it covers
108 inches in both directions backs a quilt top up to roughly 92 by 92 inches with generous allowance all round for a longarm. That covers most throw, twin and queen tops in one seamless piece.
For a king, you will want two. One seam instead of three or four, and enough left over to back a throw, line a bag, or start something else entirely.
One honest note about the color
Pale neutrals are the hardest to judge on a screen. This cloth gets called cream in one shop, ivory, natural or warm white in the next, and a monitor will push it toward yellow or toward grey depending on the screen and the room it is in. Order it, unwrap it, and put it next to your quilt top in daylight. If it is not the one, you have sixty days to tell us and we refund every cent, return shipping included, no restocking fee.
