A seam guide and something to practise on. That is the whole idea.

The problem this solves. A quarter-inch seam that is a whisker off does not look wrong on one block. It looks wrong after twelve, when the rows will not line up and you cannot tell which seam caused it. Most machines have no marking where you actually need one, and eyeballing the edge of the presser foot is a guess repeated a few hundred times. The ruler sets the allowance once, the magnetic guide holds the fabric to it, and every seam after that is the same width as the first.

Why these two belong together. Setting a seam guide takes two minutes. Learning to trust it takes a stack of strips. The Morning Mist mini strips are already cut to 2.5" x 10", so there is nothing to measure before you start sewing, and 40 of them is enough to run the same seam over and over until your hands stop thinking about it. When you are done practising you have not wasted anything, because strip patchwork is what those pieces were for.

One honest note. The magnetic guide grips a steel needle plate. If your machine has an aluminium or plastic bed it will not hold, and you will want the ruler on its own. The mini strips are short 10" strips, not full width-of-fabric jelly roll strips, and the cotton is on the lightweight side, so it presses easily but is worth keeping in mind where coverage matters. How to set it up

For a precise 1/4" seam, place the magnetic guide in front of the presser foot, or move the needle position to the far right. For allowances smaller than 1/4", washi tape works better than the magnet.
