Enchanted Navigation medallion quilt with a mariner's compass star and flying geese borders in woodland tones

Enchanted Navigation Free Quilt Pattern

There is something quietly magical about Enchanted Navigation, a medallion quilt that feels like a compass glowing softly in a misty forest. At its heart sits a many pointed star, its long rays radiating out from a gentle round centre, worked in deep teal, plum and midnight blue against a soft, mottled ground. Ring upon ring of little triangles then travel outwards around it, so the whole quilt seems to point off in every direction at once, like a compass rose come to life.

The star at the centre is a mariner's compass, with slim pointed rays reaching towards the edges of its frame, while the borders that surround it are built from rows of small triangles marching in formation. Set in a woodland palette of greens, blues and soft purples, the quilt has a calm, atmospheric mood, at once still and full of quiet movement.

Here is why this one is worth making:

  • A striking medallion centrepiece. That radiating compass star makes a real focal point, the kind of block that draws the eye straight to the middle of the quilt and holds it there.
  • Layers of movement in the borders. Those rings of little triangles give the quilt wonderful energy and depth, carrying the eye outwards from the star to the very edges.
  • A generous throw size. At 57" x 71", it is lovely draped over a sofa or the end of a bed, ample enough to wrap up in on a cool evening.
