What makes it work so beautifully is the way each block is pieced. Every block is stitched directly onto a square of muslin that acts as a foundation, so the strips never have to line up with one another as you go. Before any sewing begins, a guide line is drawn on the muslin, and it is set deliberately to one side of the true diagonal rather than running from corner to corner, which leaves room for the narrow strip that runs down the centre of the block. The width of that centre strip is worked out by standing the finished block on its point and reading the distance across the diagonal, so the very same method holds at any block size you fancy.
