These octagon placemats are one of our favourite little makes, and in this tutorial from our Fabric Hut channel, we show you how the whole top grows outward from the centre, one round at a time. They double beautifully as candle mats or a small centrepiece, and once you understand how they are built, you can make them entirely your own.
Here is what makes this one worth watching:
- It grows from the centre out, one round at a time. You start with the octagon centre and add a round of strips, then another, watching the shape build steadily outward rather than piecing it all in one go.
- The real trick is pressing and trimming after every round. Each time you add a round, you press it flat and trim the outer edge back to a clean, straight line before the next one goes on. That single habit is what stops the shape distorting as it gains rounds, and it carries over to almost anything built in rounds.
- The strip widths are yours to decide. Because you measure the edge before cutting each new round, the widths can vary as much as you like, which means the final look is your design choice rather than something the pattern dictates.
