Autumn takes its name from the fabric collection rather than from a palette of falling leaves, so the original is brighter than the title suggests. One large star spreads right across the surface in clear, saturated colour, held steady by a calm background that lets every point read from the other side of a room. It makes a striking throw, and it looks quite different depending on where you place your colours.
Here is what to know before you start:
- One star, not a grid of blocks. The triangles are joined into vertical columns and diagonal rows, and the sections are then brought together with large background pieces. You are assembling a single image rather than repeating a unit.
- A generous throw size. At 49.5" x 71", it is just right for wrapping up on the sofa or draping over the end of a bed.
- Fat quarter friendly. One fat quarter bundle covers the star, alongside a few plain cottons and a background fabric.
- There is real cutting involved. Most of the quilt is quarter square and half square triangles, so label your pieces as you cut and keep them grouped by fabric.
- The colour placement is yours. Lay the triangles out and move them about before you sew. Once the columns are joined, the arrangement is settled.
