Sewing a perfect white centre square in a chain block

How to Sew a Perfect Centre Square in a Chain Block

It is often the smallest details that make a quilt block sing, and a crisp, perfectly square centre is one of them. In this tutorial over on our Fabric Hut channel, we walk you through sewing that perfect centre square in a chain block, joining two small units so the little white square in the middle comes out clean and true. It is a step from our Because of the Brave project, and the same technique will serve you in all sorts of blocks.

Here is why this one is worth watching:

  • Chain piecing the units. We show how to feed the small two and a half by four and a half inch units through the machine one after another, so your pieces come together smoothly and stay wonderfully consistent.
  • Setting up for precision. So much of a sharp centre square comes down to an accurate quarter inch seam, and we walk through how to set up your machine so every unit lands exactly where it should.
  • Spinning the seams for a flat finish. Right at the centre, where all the seams meet, we share the trick of spinning those seam allowances so the bulk spreads out evenly, the intersection lies flat, and your white square stays beautifully square.

Fallen for this block? The whole quilt comes as our Because of the Brave kit, with everything you need to make your own gathered together in one place. We would love to see how yours turns out!

Which part of piecing do you find most satisfying when it all lines up just right? Tell us in the comments. And if you have not already, subscribing to our channel means you will catch every step of this project as soon as it lands.
