Naruko Free Quilt Pattern

Naruko Free Quilt Pattern

This is one of those patterns that makes you pause the first time you see it, and then immediately start wondering what fabrics you could showcase inside those striking spiky frames. Naruko sets a bright focal print at the centre of each block and surrounds it with a sharp, modern starburst, so the whole quilt becomes a gallery of little fabric jewels held in their own spiky settings.

The finished quilt measures 48" x 64", a really lovely lap or throw size, and it leans on a small palette of standout points around a calm background. It is a wonderful pattern for fussy cutting a fabric you have been hoarding, or for letting a few favourite novelty prints have their moment in the spotlight.

  • Bold, striking stars. The spiky points are made with foundation paper piecing, which gives them really crisp tips and that lovely graphic feel, and once you settle into the rhythm of paper piecing it is incredibly satisfying.
  • A wonderful home for special prints. Each block centres a different focal square, so it is a sweet way to use up small cuts of fabric you have been saving for the right project, or to celebrate one favourite collection across twelve blocks.
  • A modern, dramatic finished look. The contrast between busy stars and calm background gives the whole quilt a confident, gallery-fresh personality that works beautifully as a throw or a wall hanging.

Tip: before you print the pattern, set your printer to "no scaling" or "actual size" so the paper piecing templates come out true. When you sew the star points, sewing slowly and pressing each section flat before the next really helps those sharp tips stay nice and crisp.

Looking for special focal prints to slip into the centre of each star? Have a peek at our fat quarters collection, a beautiful selection of prints in handy cuts ready to become twelve little fabric stories inside this quilt. We would love to see how yours turns out!

Happy quilting!
