If your seams have ever felt a little wonky no matter how carefully you sew, this one is a real treat. In the first instalment of Technique Tuesday on our Fabric Hut channel, Yvonne walks you through the small, essential pressing habits that make every block flatter, every intersection neater, and every finished quilt look more polished.
Here is why this one is worth watching:
- Setting your seams properly. Yvonne shows the often skipped step of pressing the seam closed before opening it, which makes such a difference to how the stitches relax into the fabric and how flat the final seam sits.
- Pressing for true flatness. She shares the gentle, methodical pressing technique that keeps your blocks from gaining little lumps or stretching out of shape, which really shows in the accuracy of the finished top.
- The webbing trick for nine-patch blocks. Yvonne demonstrates how to web pieces together so a classic nine-patch comes out crisp and square every time, a sweet little technique that is just as useful for plenty of other blocks too.
Want to practise with the same little squares Yvonne uses? Yvonne is working with our mini charm squares in the video, so have a peek at our mini charm packs for a sweet, low-commitment way to play along with the technique. We would love to see your nine-patches!
If you have not already, subscribing to our Fabric Hut channel means you will catch every Technique Tuesday as soon as it lands. What pressing habit has made the biggest difference in your own quilting? We would love to hear in the comments.
