Dogwood in Patchwork Carnival: A Lattice in Checks, Stripes and Dots, 58 1/2 x 75"

A lattice drawn in checks, stripes and polka dots.

This is the Patchwork Carnival version of Dogwood, the quilt whose lattice is not pieced at all: it appears when you turn every other unit upside down. Two white squares meet and read as a tall window, two bands of print meet and read as a bar across it, and neither shape exists in the block you sew.

Same quilt, 58 1/2 by 75 inches, seventy-eight units, one cut. The difference is the fabric. Patchwork Carnival is forty prints at full volume, gingham checks and candy stripes and dots in red, pink, blue, green, purple and yellow. In this design that works in your favor: the busier the prints, the more the white squares stand out, and the lattice gets stronger rather than weaker.

What it takes

Five packs of mini strips, forty to a pack: 156 for the top, 38 for the binding out of the same packs, 6 left over. Two packs of 5 inch white squares, 78 of them in the top. Backing is 2 3/8 yards of 108 inch wide fabric at 66 1/2 by 83 inches, batting to match.

One thing to watch

The rule that makes this quilt work is contrast, and in a bright collection it is easy to lose. If a pale yellow check lands next to a white square, that corner of the lattice disappears. Put the palest four or five prints aside as you lay the units out and spread them where they meet a band of print rather than a square.

The Blossom Breeze version has the full explanation of the turn and how the lattice is built, and nothing in it changes with the collection.
