A quilt block is only as accurate as its seam allowance. Get the quarter inch slightly wrong and by the time you have joined a dozen pieces the whole row is out of square. This foot fixes that with a metal guide bar running along the right edge, giving the fabric a physical wall to follow.

Feed the fabric against the guide and the seam comes out at a true quarter inch every single time, without taping a stack of index cards to your machine bed. Because you are no longer watching the throat plate, you can sew faster and keep your eyes on the fabric.
