A rotary cutter decides how straight your pieces come out, so it is worth picking the right one for the job. We carry Famore, OLFA and TrueCut cutters in the three sizes quilters reach for most, and every handle here takes the titanium-coated blades we sell in the rotary cutter blades collection. Change a blade in seconds, line the ruler up and cut.

Pick the size that matches the cut

The 28mm cutter turns tight curves and trims small units. The 45mm is the everyday size for strips, squares and blocks. The 60mm carries you along long borders and backing cuts without stopping. Quilters who piece every week usually keep a 45mm on the table and a 28mm nearby for applique shapes.

Cut several layers in one pass

A sharp blade and steady pressure let you stack layers and cut them together, which is where a rotary cutter saves the most time. Our customers tell us the cut stays clean right through the stack, and that is what keeps the pieces the same size when they reach the machine.

Blades, handles and spares

Handles and blades are sold separately, so you can keep a favorite handle and swap the blade when it dulls. Replacement blades in 28mm, 45mm and 60mm are in Rotary Cutter Blades, along with pinking, skip and perforating blades for decorative edges.

Rotary cutter questions

How many layers of fabric can I cut with a rotary cutter?

With a sharp 45mm or 60mm blade and a steady hand, several layers at once. Quilters testing our titanium-coated blades have cut through ten and twelve layers of quilting cotton in a single pass.

Is it better to cut fabric with a rotary cutter or scissors?

A rotary cutter and ruler give you straighter strips and let you cut multiple layers at once, which is why quilters use them for most fabric cutting. Keep a pair of fabric scissors for clipping threads, notches and curves.

What is the best rotary cutter for arthritic hands?

Look for an ergonomic handle, such as the TrueCut My Comfort Cutter, and keep a sharp blade in it. A fresh blade needs far less pressure than a dull one, which is easier on hands and wrists.
