Precut quilting squares take the cutting out of the first day of a project. Every square here is 5in, cut from quilting cotton, and sold in packs that already work together, so the colors match without you holding bolts up to the light. Quilters often call these packs charm packs, and they are the fastest way into a scrappy quilt.

What you can sew with 5in squares

Forty squares make a baby quilt or a table runner. Two hundred and forty cover a throw or a twin with sashing. Squares this size also feed rag quilts, pillow fronts and block swaps, and they cut down to 2.5in units without waste.

Packs of 5in squares are often called charm packs, and packs of 10in squares are often called layer cakes. We sell them as precut 5in and 10in quilting squares.

How many 5 inch squares do I need for a quilt?

Each 5in square finishes at 4.5in once it is sewn with a quarter inch seam. A 54 x 72 inch throw laid out as 12 by 16 squares takes 192 squares, so a 240 piece pack covers the top with some to spare.

What size quilt can I make with 42 5 inch squares?

Laid out 6 by 7, forty-two squares make a top of about 27 x 31.5 inches before borders, the right size for a baby quilt, a wall hanging or a table topper.
