Rowan in Patchwork Carnival: A Mirrored Quilt in Forty Bright Prints, 58 1/2 x 75"

A mirror quilt, in forty bright prints.

This is the Patchwork Carnival version of Rowan. The top half and the bottom half hold the same three rows, one set turned over, and where the two halves meet they open into a band of white nine inches deep. Sew three rows, sew them again the other way up, and the top is done.

Finished size is 58 1/2 by 75 inches and the construction has not moved an inch. Patchwork Carnival changes the mood: checks, stripes, stars and dots in strong colors instead of soft florals, which makes that white band in the middle read as a proper pause rather than a gentle one.

What it takes

Five packs of mini strips, forty to a pack, of which the top takes 156 and the binding 38, with 6 left over. Two packs of 5 inch white charm squares, 78 in the top. Backing is 2 3/8 yards of 108 inch wide fabric at 66 1/2 by 83 inches, and the batting is cut to the same size.

Where the darks go

This quilt is built on an arrangement by value: the darkest prints along the top and bottom edges, the palest ones framing the white in the middle. Patchwork Carnival gives you both ends of that range in one box, from a near black spot to a pale yellow check, so sort the strips into two piles before you start and the layout almost builds itself.

The Blossom Breeze version walks through the mirror and the pressing in full.
