Famore Rotary Cutter + 10 Titanium Rotary Cutter Blades, 45mm

You know the exact moment.

The fabric stops gliding. The blade skips a thread, you go back over the same line, and you press a little harder than you did an hour ago. Your wrist notices before you do.

Dianne Barnhart has been quilting for 24 years, and she wrote this to us:

"I have been quilting for 24 years, have gone through a lot of blades and fabric! I was so frustrated with having to change my rotary cutter blade before I could get even one quilt cut out. I bought a name brand blade and noticed the quality is not the same. I saw your ad and received the blades yesterday. Wow, what a difference! Love the ease and knowing my fabric will be cut accurately and on the first cut!"

Dianne Barnhart, verified review

Twenty four years of quilting, and she still could not get one quilt cut out on a single blade. That is not Dianne. There are two separate things making a rotary cut harder than it needs to be, and almost every quilter only ever fixes one of them.

Two kinds of effort, and only one of them is the blade

The first one everybody knows about. A blade that is not sharp enough stops cutting and starts pushing the fabric ahead of it. It skips a thread here and two there, you go back over the same line, and you press harder to make up the difference. That costs you accuracy before it costs you anything else.

The second one almost nobody thinks about, and it is the reason a brand new blade can still feel like work. Most rotary cutters turn the blade against a screw and a spring, a design that has barely changed in three decades. The blade rotates against friction. It is a small resistance, but you fight it on every inch of every cut, and it is still there on the day you fit a fresh blade.

This is why the blades and the cutter come together. The titanium blades deal with the edge. The Famoré cutter, with precision ball bearings instead of the old screw and spring, deals with the mechanism. Put them together and there is very little left for your hand to do beyond guiding the cutter along the ruler.

If you quilt with arthritis or fibromyalgia, those two sources of effort are exactly the ones that decide how long a cutting session lasts before you have to stop. Let us take them one at a time.

The blades: through the whole stack, first pass

Here is something the big brands would rather not say out loud. Most popular rotary cutters do not ship with the highest quality blades attached. The cutter is the thing you buy once. The blade is where the cost is hidden, and it is hidden in a purchase you make again and again for years.

Our 45mm blades are made from SKS-7 tungsten steel with a titanium coating. The titanium does two specific things: it hardens the cutting edge and it resists corrosion. A harder edge does not deform under the load of a thick stack, and that is what decides whether the bottom layer gets cut or dragged.

Because a blade rarely fails all at once. It skips. One uncut thread on the third layer, two on the fourth, and suddenly you are pulling the ruler back and recutting an edge that was supposed to be finished. Katherine Davis had been living with exactly that: "the blade I had in my rotary cutter kept skipping so I had to go over the cut several times. I switched it out to these titanium blades. Cutting was effortless."

What that buys you is the whole stack in one pass, cut where the ruler says and nowhere else:

• Judy: "I was surprised at how easy it was to cut 8 layers of cotton fabric. I have tried other blades that cannot cut 8 layers of cotton fabric."
• MarLene: "Love the blades, they are so smooth and it really does cut 10 layers at a time."
• Spaghettimom, who has used almost every brand on the market: "Cut well through 15 layers when doing wonky quilts for donation."
• Becky Irvine: "They cut through 8 layers of fabric cleanly, with minimal pressure."
• Patricia Nichols: "Smooth, straight cuts through 4 layers, lots of cuts and still going."

On camera, quilters have taken them through eight layers of tightly woven cotton, four layers of denim straight over a heavy duty seam, four layers of batting, and a stack of strip sets where the seam allowances bunch up. Clean on the other side each time.

Kathleen Anderson said it in one line: "I have never been able to make a cut with such great precision as this one."

Less pressure is not a comfort detail. It is the whole thing.

Sue Odom: "With arthritis in my wrist sharper blades are a joy." Diana Tomlin: "I have Arthritis in my hands. This rotary Cutters i don't have to bear down so hard."

So much for the blade. Now the part that is still costing you effort even when the blade is new.

The cutter: a new generation of rotary handles

Let us deal with the obvious thought first, because you have probably had it already: a cutter bundled in with a blade order is usually a cheap cutter. You would be right to think so. We used to include one, and some of you told us plainly what you thought of it.

This is not that cutter. The Famoré 45mm rotary handle is made by Famoré Cutlery and we sell it on its own, at its own price, on this site. Inside the rotation mechanism, a system of precision ball bearings replaces the old screw and spring. The blade spins almost frictionless, and the difference is something you feel from the very first cut.

What the Famoré does well:

• Ball bearing rotation: almost no resistance, so cutting through layered fabric takes a fraction of the effort
• Silicon coated ergonomic handle: comfortable across long sessions, with weight that feels balanced in the hand
• Quick blade change: a screw nut closure that swaps blades in about thirty seconds
• Universal compatibility: works with any standard 45mm blade, including the titanium blades in this pack

Patty Merrell, who bought it on its own: "The ball bearings make such a difference when cutting. Smooth and easy. It is a nice weight and the silicon coated handle feels nice in your hand and is comfortable. I am so glad I made this purchase."

So why is it half price?

A fair question, and one we would rather answer than have you wonder about. The blades are $75, which is what a pack of ten has always cost here. The Famoré cutter is $49.97, and we sell it on its own at that price on this site. Buy them separately and you pay $124.97.

Buy them together in this pack and you pay half of that: $62.48. It is the simplest deal we know how to make. Buy more, save more. When you take the cutter and the blades in one order, we can afford to take 50% off the pair, and this is not a sale with an end date. It is the price of the pack.

The reasoning behind it has not changed. The Famoré changes how every cut feels for as long as you own it, and quilters who cut with the pair together tend to come back for blades. That is the whole bet.

What ten blades gets you

Ten blades sounds like a lot until you remember what you are used to. The pack arrives sealed, in its own storage container, and the blades come lightly oiled, which is precisely what lets the unopened ones sit on a shelf for years and come out as sharp as the day they were packed. There is no hurry to use them.

How long each one lasts is not our number to give you. It is theirs. Marla Liberty cut 40 triple layer masks on a single blade, after previously changing hers every five cuts. Barbara Dolan is shorter about it: "The blades last 10 X longer than regular blades!"

The first thing to do when it arrives

Take the blade out of the cutter and put one of ours in.

The Famoré ships with a blade already fitted, the way most cutters do. Treat it as a placeholder rather than something to cut with. It is not the blade this page is about, and it is not the blade you paid for. If anything, it is a decent illustration of the point made further up: the cutter is where the engineering goes, and the blade is the afterthought.

Swapping it takes about thirty seconds. The Famoré uses a screw nut closure, so you loosen, swap and retighten. There is a video below if you would rather see it done first.

Get yours

Ten titanium coated blades that go through the whole stack on the first pass. A next generation cutter with precision ball bearings. Both together for half of what they cost apart. And 60 days to decide, with nothing to send back if you change your mind.

Add it to your cart on this page, and cut your next quilt the way it is supposed to feel.

P.S. Read that guarantee once more, because it is not the usual one. You are not risking the price of the pack. If these blades do not outlast your old ones, or if they are simply not the best you have used, you get your money back and you still have ten titanium blades and a ball bearing cutter on your table. The only way to find out which of us is right is to cut with them.
