Hawthorn in Patchwork Carnival: One Unit Turned Column by Column, 58 1/2 x 75"

The same hedge, in fairground colors.

This is the Patchwork Carnival version of Hawthorn, the strip and charm quilt that stands one unit upright and alternates it column by column. The quilt has not changed: 58 1/2 by 75 inches, thirteen columns of six units, one cut in the whole thing and that cut made after the sewing.

What changes is the box. Patchwork Carnival is forty prints of gingham checks, candy stripes, white stars and polka dots in red, pink, blue, green, purple and yellow, with small ditsy florals between them. Against the soft florals of the Blossom Breeze version it reads loud and old fashioned, closer to a county fair than a hedgerow, and the white squares have to work harder to keep the columns apart.

What it takes

Five packs of mini strips, 2 1/2 by 10 inches, forty to a pack. The top takes 156 and the binding takes 38 more from the same packs, leaving 6 over. Two packs of 5 inch white charm squares, of which the top takes 78.

Backing is 2 3/8 yards of 108 inch wide fabric at 66 1/2 by 83 inches with no seam, and the batting matches. Our guide to quilt backing covers the choice.

Choosing prints this bright

With a collection like this one the usual advice flips. You are not trying to keep the prints in one family, because they never were: checks, stripes, stars and dots all at full strength. What you need is value. Sort the strips into two piles, light and dark, before you start, and build each column so that no two darks sit side by side. The white squares do the rest.

If you want the same quilt in something quieter, the Blossom Breeze version has the full walkthrough of how the unit works, and it applies here line for line.
