Christen from I See Stars Quilting on Quilting Frustration

The seam will not match. You rip it out, sew it again, and it still will not match. Somewhere in the ninety seconds that follow, a sentence arrives that has nothing to do with the seam: not this seam is not matching, which describes what is on the table, but I am not good at this, which is a verdict on the person holding it.

Christen, of I See Stars Quilting, gives that moment a whole episode of her podcast. It is a quieter listen than a technique video, and it is about the part of quilting that nobody films.

Worth listening for the distinction she draws between being frustrated and being incapable, and for what she suggests doing at the machine while it is happening. What reaches you from everyone else is the finished quilt, photographed flat and square in good light. Nobody photographs the seam ripping session, so the evidence available to you is one sided, and the conclusion it invites is not a conclusion at all.

If what is really stalling you is a pile of projects rather than a single seam, we wrote a long guide to that: UFOs and WIPs, how to finish the sewing projects you started.

Credit where it belongs: the episode is by Christen, on the I See Stars Quilting YouTube channel.
