Hemming jeans is where machines misbehave. The foot tips up as it climbs onto the side seam, the stitches bunch into a knot, and half the time the needle breaks. The fix is not more force, it is leveling the presser foot so it stays horizontal as it crosses the bump.

Slide the seam jumper under the back of the foot before you reach the thick section and the foot stays flat, the feed dogs keep gripping, and the stitches come out the same length either side of the seam. It works the same way on bag straps, quilt binding, upholstery, layered denim and any spot where the fabric suddenly gets thicker.
