The tips lost a round.
Not to a better method, and not to a better sewist. They lost to the same block, sewn by the same hands, with none of the tips applied at all. That is the part worth sitting with, and it happened on camera while a snowball quilt block was built twice over for a sampler quilt along, once with every trick in the list and once with nothing but fabric, thread and a straight line.
The technique on trial is the one you already know by three different names. Stitch and flip. Flip and sew. Snowballing. It frustrates people out of all proportion to how simple it looks, which is why the tips exist, and why somebody finally testing them is more useful than another tutorial repeating them.

What a Snowball Quilt Block Actually Is
A snowball quilt block is a square with its corners taken off, and the corners are not cut off. They are sewn off.
You lay a small square face down on the corner of a bigger square, draw a line from corner to corner across the back of it, sew on that line, trim the excess behind the stitching, and press the small square open. A triangle appears where a square used to be. Four corners, four triangles, and the block reads as an octagon. Set those blocks beside plain squares in a quilt top and the corners meet into secondary shapes that were never pieced, which is most of the reason the block has survived a century and a half.
Six steps. Mark, place, pin, sew, trim, press. Nothing in that list is difficult and every one of them is somewhere a block can go wrong.
The Corner Square Decides Everything
The size of the small square is the whole design.
Small corner squares, say a quarter of the block width, give you the classic snowball with its gentle clipped corners. Corner squares at exactly half the block width give you something else: the four triangles meet each other at the midpoint of every side, the centre square turns on point, and you have a diamond in a square block, part of the square in a square family catalogued in Barbara Brackman's Encyclopedia of Pieced Quilt Patterns. Same six steps, different arithmetic.
That larger version is the one that went on trial here, and it was the right choice for a test, because it is the unforgiving one. On a small corner square a little inaccuracy has somewhere to hide. On a corner square that has to meet its neighbour exactly at the halfway mark, it has nowhere at all.
Cutting Two Blocks
For two blocks finishing at twelve and a half inches unfinished, the cutting list is short: eight 6½ inch squares of background fabric and two 12½ inch squares of feature fabric. Four background squares per block, one on each corner. Nothing else.
A quiet solid in the corners and a print worth looking at in the middle is the usual reading, and it is why this block turns up in so many sampler quilts. It frames one fabric and asks nothing of the rest.
Neither block in the test was made from pre-washed fabric. One had a starch alternative applied first, for body. The other had nothing. That difference is where the experiment starts.
Every Stitch and Flip Tip, Applied to One Block
Here is what went into the block that got the full treatment, in the order it happened.
- Starch alternative on the fabric before cutting, to give it body
- The diagonal line drawn on the wrong side with a fine 0.3 mechanical pencil
- A dot of glue in the corner to tack the square down before pinning
- A pin on the outer edge, once the edges were lined up
- Stitching one needle's width to the outside of the drawn line, not on it
- Trimming with the ruler's quarter inch line laid along the stitching
The glue is the tip that earns its place fastest. On a 12½ inch square you can pin your way out of trouble, but snowballing usually shows up on small pieces, and small pieces walk under the presser foot. A dab of glue holds them still.
The other block got a water erasable marking pen instead of pencil, because the background was light and a pencil line can shadow through to the front. Two pins, no glue, no starch. And the stitching went directly on the drawn line.

Everything else was held constant, and that matters more than it sounds. Both blocks ran the same needle and the same 50wt cotton thread, which is the weight most quilters piece with because it is fine enough to sink into the seam and strong enough to survive being trimmed against. Both were trimmed the same way, quarter inch line on the stitch line, corner off. If the two blocks come out different, the tips are the reason.
Round One: the Tips Win, and Not by Much
Both blocks went under a 12½ inch square ruler.
The tipped block came up short in two places. Short enough to notice, close enough that it could still fall inside the seam allowance and survive. The plain block came up short at the top, short again in the middle, and short at the bottom. More places, same order of magnitude.
So the tips won. A block that misses in two spots beats a block that misses in three. But nobody watching that comparison would call it a case for buying anything.
And then they ran it again, changing one thing.
Round Two: Opposite Corners, and the Result Nobody Expected
In the first round the corners went on in no particular order. For the second round the only change was sequence: one corner, then the corner diagonally opposite it, then the remaining two the same way. The question was whether the order you snowball the corners changes how the block finishes.
The tipped block came out worse. One corner pulled up short enough that it would not make the seam allowance at all, which is the kind of short that costs you a point. The stitch line itself was fine, so the likely fix was more pressing to ease the corner open rather than anything wrong in the sewing.
The plain block came out better than its round one self. Short in the middle, the same spot as before, short on one side, and good along the whole top edge.
Two rounds, four blocks, and a conclusion that refuses to be tidy. The tips did a little better. They also did a little worse.

What the Test Actually Shows
It shows that the tips are not the variable that decides your block.
Ginnie Lynn's own reading of it, after making all four: it comes down to taking your time, making sure your pieces are accurate, and making sure you are pressing things well. Not the starch. Not the glue. The unglamorous three.
That is an uncomfortable thing for a fabric shop to publish, and we are publishing it anyway, because you have almost certainly already suspected it. Every quilter who has bought the recommended notion and still watched a corner come up short has suspected it. The corner does not know what pen drew the line. It knows whether the square was cut square and whether the seam was pressed all the way open.

The Pressing Nobody Wants to Talk About
Of those unglamorous three, pressing is the one quilters shortchange, and the reason is not laziness. It is that pressing means standing up.
Every snowballed corner needs its triangle pressed fully open, right into the fold. A corner pressed most of the way open sits a fraction short, and a fraction short across four corners is a block that will not make its size. That is very likely what happened to the tipped block in round two: the stitching was fine, the fold was not opened out.
So the corner that failed did not fail because the quilter skipped a notion. It failed because the fold kept a sixteenth of an inch that pressing was supposed to give back. Our quilting seam roller weighs two thirds of a pound, which is the whole point of it: the weight does the work, so the fold gets set flat from where you are sitting instead of waiting for the trip to the ironing board that you were not going to make.
The One Stitch and Flip Tip Worth Keeping
She was asked, in effect, to pick one. She picked the stitching line.
If she had to apply a single tip, she would stitch two needle widths off the line rather than one, because that leaves enough ease in the fabric to give a little extra all the way around. That is the tip with a mechanism behind it. The fold at the corner eats fabric. Sewing slightly wide gives the fold something to eat.
Everything else on the list is a handling aid. Glue stops small pieces from shifting. Starch stops soft fabric from stretching. A water erasable pen keeps a light background clean where a pencil would shadow. Each solves a specific problem, and none of them solves the problem of a block finishing short.

If the Snowball Corner Is Not Winning for You
There is more than one road to this block, and taking a different one is not surrender.
You can build a square in a square from cut triangles instead of folded corners, which trades the trimming step for bias edges. Before You Cut the Next One
Cut square. Press properly. Check against a ruler that tells you the truth.
That last one is not a slogan. A snowball quilt block at this size is supposed to hit 12½ inches unfinished, and you cannot know whether it did unless you lay something honest across it. Every verdict in that test came from a 12½ inch square ruler laid over a block, four times, because measuring is what turned an argument into an answer.
If you do not own one that size, our 12.5 inch square slotted quilting ruler squares blocks up to 12 inches and has cutting grooves at every half inch, so the rotary blade runs in a channel instead of drifting along an edge, and you never lift the ruler between cuts. It is the tool doing the work in the part of this test that mattered, which is the checking.
Then make the block. Both of them, if you have the fabric. One with the tips and one without, and see which way your own machine votes.
P.S. Three things to carry away. The tips did not decide the outcome, the care did. If you keep one tip, keep sewing two needle widths outside the drawn line, because it is the one that gives the fold somewhere to go. And a corner that comes up short is usually a corner that was not pressed fully open, so press it again before you decide the block has failed you.
