Emma and Tracey made one of the clearest beginner quilting walkthroughs on YouTube, for LoveCrafts. It takes a first quilt from a stack of five inch squares all the way to a bound finish in a single video, at a pace that assumes you have never made one before.
The quilt they build is a one patch: forty-two five inch squares, six across and seven down, with a border added to keep the body square. Along the way they cover rotary cutting, the quarter inch seam, pressing, basting, machine quilting with a walking foot, and a simple straight binding.
What we like most about it is the honesty at the end. They tell you not to panic over a first quilt, to treat it as a learning curve, and that if it is not perfect it does not matter, because whoever you give it to will love it anyway. That is the right note to end a beginner tutorial on, and most tutorials skip it.
If you want the whole path written out, including the seam test that decides whether your corners meet and what you actually need to buy, we wrote it: how to make a quilt, a complete step by step guide for beginners.
Credit where it belongs: the tutorial is presented by Emma and Tracey, on the LoveCrafts YouTube channel.
