Every quilt needs one of these. Sunday Best is the cotton we reach for when the quilt is going to be kept, denser and heavier than our Everyday line, and this is the piece of the collection that does the quiet work between the florals. A single 5 yard cut, 180 inches long.

About this blue

The ground is a soft light blue and the dots are scattered rather than set on a grid, in two shades: a mid blue that sits close to the ground and a deep navy that is the same navy as the trees in Nightwood. They come in a range of sizes, tossed about like fruit under a tree, which is where the name comes from.

Because the dots are scattered and not lined up, there is no grid to match at a seam and no direction to keep track of. Cut into it from any edge.

Where this print works

A dot is the relief in a quilt made mostly of florals. It gives the eye somewhere to rest and it stops a collection from looking like one long flower bed. Use it as the light or middle value in almost any block, and it is a particularly good chain in an Irish chain because the navy dots read from a distance while the light ground keeps the value up.

It also solves a specific problem in this collection. Meadowsweet at the light end and Nightwood at the dark end are far apart in value, and Windfall sits neatly between them, which is exactly what a three step design needs.

Good to know

44 inches is the standard width for quilting cotton, which is what this is. It is not wide backing. If you are backing a quilt more than about 42 inches across, you will need a seam down the middle or a piece of 108 inch wide backing.
