Sunday Best is the cotton we reach for when the quilt is going to be kept. It is denser and heavier than our Everyday line, closely woven, and it takes a crease and holds a quarter inch seam the way quilting cotton should. This one arrives as a single 5 yard cut, 180 inches long, ready to cut into from wherever you like.
About this blue
Understory is a mid teal. Not the blue of open sky and not navy either, but the blue you get looking into water with trees over it. The leaf pattern is printed a shade or two deeper than the ground, so it never separates into figure and background. Stand back from it and you see a blue that moves slightly. Stand close and you see ferns.
That is the whole use of a tonal. It gives you a colour with something going on inside it, without giving you a print that has to be matched, centered or planned around.
Where this print works
A tonal this quiet is the piece of the quilt that holds still while everything else moves. Use it where you want colour without noise: the chain in an Irish chain, the dark in a rail fence, the sashing between blocks, a border, or binding. It has no direction to match and no repeat to line up, so you can cut into it from any edge.
It is also the middle value in this collection. Put it between Meadowsweet and Nightwood and you have the three clear steps of light, medium and dark that a chain quilt needs to read.

Good to know
44 inches is the standard width for quilting cotton, which is what this is. It is not wide backing. If you are backing a quilt more than about 42 inches across, you will need a seam down the middle or a piece of 108 inch wide backing.
