Cherry Blossom in Patchwork Carnival: The Mini Strip Quilt in Forty Bright Prints, 56 x 60"

One cut, no points to match, and forty prints that behave like a fairground.

This is the Patchwork Carnival version of Cherry Blossom, the beginner quilt that finishes at 56 by 60 inches. Sixty blocks, four across and fifteen down, each one two mini strips and a white square trimmed to 5 by 4 1/2 inches. That trim is the only cutting in the whole quilt.

Cherry Blossom was drawn for a collection with forty prints, and Patchwork Carnival has exactly that: gingham checks, candy stripes, stars and polka dots in red, pink, blue, green, purple and yellow. Each print appears three times across the top, so no block repeats near its twin and the quilt reads as proper scrap work.

What you need

Four packs of mini strips, 2 1/2 by 10 inches, forty to a pack. The top takes 120, the binding takes 34, and 6 are spare. Two packs of 5 inch white charm squares, of which 60 go into the top. Backing is 1 7/8 yards of 108 inch wide fabric, which gives 64 by 68 inches with no seam anywhere in it.

The one cut, and why it exists

Two strips sewn together along their long edges come to 4 1/2 inches. A charm square is 5. That half inch has to go somewhere, so every white square is trimmed from 5 inches to 5 by 4 1/2 before anything else happens. Sixty squares, one straight cut each.

After that it is two strips, a square, and sixty blocks that are all the same. Chain piece them with our guide to chain piecing and the top goes together in an afternoon.

The original article has the whole pattern written out, and there is also a Morning Mist version in greens if you want it quiet.
