Framed Squares Free Quilt Pattern

Some quilts are built to show off fabric, and this one does it beautifully. Fifteen large feature squares sit like little framed pictures across the top, each one given room to breathe, and between them sit fifteen pieced blocks with a calm centre square, gentle framing strips and four crisp triangle corners pointing inwards. Set with sashing and tiny cornerstones, then finished with three borders, it comes out at a generous 73" x 84", big enough for a proper bed quilt.

The making is calmer than it looks. The feature blocks are simply 10" squares, so any print you have been saving gets to be the star. The pieced blocks come together from a 5-1/4" centre square, four 2-7/8" x 5-1/4" rectangles around it, and half square triangles trimmed to 2-7/8", four to a block. From there it is 2" x 10" sashing strips with 2" cornerstones between them, and six rows of five blocks alternating feature square and pieced block. The three borders go on last, a 3" inner, a 3-1/2" middle and a 3" outer, and that is what gives the finished quilt its polished, framed look.

• A perfect showcase for special prints. Those fifteen 10" squares are made for the fabrics that feel too pretty to cut small, novelty prints, panels, or a favourite large scale floral.
• Straightforward piecing, handsome result. Squares, rectangles and half square triangles are all it asks of you, and the sashing keeps every block neatly separated, so nothing has to line up across seams.
• Two colourways to choose from. One is warm and sunny in pinks and yellows, the other cool and fresh in blues and greys, so you can set the mood to suit the room, or the little person it is for.
