A good design always has a pressing plan. Brenda, of Conquering Mount Scrapmore, says it almost in passing near the end of a nineteen minute block tutorial, and it is the most useful sentence in the video.
The block is the Keyhole Star, this week's Mini Monday on a channel built around finishing off what is already in the bins. It is four half square triangles and two flying geese, and she is making it in the pinks and grays she has left over from a twin sized quilt, headed for charity quilts rather than back into storage.
Her pressing plan is two rules. Press the half square triangles toward the dark. Press the flying geese away from the goose. Follow both and every seam in the block nests without being asked to, which is the entire point of having the plan before you start rather than discovering it halfway through. She also trims her dog ears deeper than the usual right angle, taking a little more off each corner to cut bulk, and shows that the seam at the edge is still sound afterward.

Two moments are worth the time. She cuts these half square triangles the traditional way instead of with the ruler she normally reaches for, because there is not enough of the dark gray left to cut it her usual way, and she turns that into the lesson: when you sew from scraps, what stops you is knowing only one way to make a unit, not the scraps themselves. Then, further in, she loses track of which piece goes where, says so on camera, works it out and carries on. The outer rows of this block only nest at the two ends, by design, and she says that out loud so nobody spends an evening trying to match seams that were never meant to match.
