At 108 inches across, this single piece backs a queen size quilt on its own. Nothing to join, nothing to line up, nothing running across the back of your work.
Standard quilting cotton comes off the bolt at 44 or 45 inches wide. To back anything bigger than a lap quilt with it, you buy two lengths, join them, match the pattern, press the seam open, and then hope it lands somewhere your longarm will forgive. This piece is 108 inches in both directions, which is the equivalent of 7.2 yards of regular width fabric, in one uncut piece.
About this tan
It is a warm neutral, sand and cream moving through each other, lighter where the dye pooled and deeper where it settled. Nothing in it is flat.
This is the back for a reproduction quilt, the civil war prints and the 1930s repros, where a modern white would look wrong the moment the quilt was folded. It is the back for an autumn top, the rusts and golds and browns, which a cool gray would chill and this one warms. It is the back for a hand quilted heirloom, where the stitches are meant to be seen but softly, and cream lets them show without shouting. And it is the back for a quilt that will live in a house with dogs, children and a wood floor, because tan forgives what white puts on display.
If gray is the neutral that steps back, this is the neutral that warms the room. Both disappear behind a busy top. Only one of them makes it look like autumn.
How much it covers
108 inches in both directions backs a quilt top up to roughly 92 by 92 inches with generous allowance all round for a longarm. That covers most throw, twin and queen tops in one seamless piece.
For a king, you will want two. One seam instead of three or four, and enough left over to back a throw, line a bag, or start something else entirely.
One honest note about the color
This one has a naming problem more than a color problem. The same cloth gets called tan in one shop, beige in the next, cream, sand or taupe somewhere else, and a screen will push it toward yellow or toward pink depending on the monitor.
