What it's for

• Less fraying before pre-washing. Trim the raw edges of fabrics that fray easily, like flannel or t-shirt knits, so they don't tangle in the washer.
• Seam finishing. Pink seam allowances after stitching to cut down bulk, and save yourself clipping curves and circles by hand.
• Decorative edges. Crisp patterned borders on materials that don't fray, like felt, polar fleece, leather, paper and scrapbook pieces.
• Easier on your hands. It works with downward rolling pressure instead of the repeated squeeze of pinking shears.

How to use it

• Protect your cutting mat. Use an old self-healing mat, or flip yours over and use the back. The teeth press down at intervals and can wear the surface of a mat you care about.
• Press firmly and straight down. Lock the cutter open, stand up, and push down through the center of the tool at about a 45 degree angle so the teeth go through every thread.
• Keep the blade upright against the ruler. If the cutter tilts, the points of the teeth can hit the edge of your acrylic ruler and chip it.
• Allow for the points. The peaks of a pinked edge sit a little beyond the line a straight blade would cut, so take that into account when you cut pieces to size.

Pinking blade or pinking shears?

• Edge. The blade usually leaves a shallower zigzag. Shears cut a deeper V.
• Fraying. The deeper V of shears holds back heavy fraying better. The blade is the better fit for light to medium fraying.
• Speed and layers. The blade rolls through in one continuous cut and takes up to 5 layers of quilting cotton with firm pressure. Shears cut in short bites and are heavier to hold, but they handle thick layers.
• Your hands. The blade needs downward pressure and almost no squeezing. Long sessions with shears are harder on the hands.
