SewTites Magnum magnetic sewing pins strength comparison chart

At a glance

  • 5 SewTites Magnum magnetic sewing pins in a keepsake tin
  • Each pin measures 3.98" x 0.59" (101 x 15 mm), the longest model SewTites makes
  • Five rare earth magnets on the back of every pin
  • Recommended by the Longarm League for professional longarm quilters
  • Loads a quilt onto a longarm frame without straight pins
  • Also holds beads in weighted blankets and works for bags, pockets and cork

Loading a quilt is the part of longarm quilting nobody looks forward to. Straight pins mean bending over the frame, pushing steel through backing and leader, and doing it again every few inches across the full width. SewTites Magnum magnetic sewing pins replace that whole step. You lay the fabric on the leader, drop a Magnum on top, and the magnet does the holding.

Why the Magnums work on a longarm frame

Each Magnum is a four inch bar designed with five rare earth magnets running along the back. That length is the point. A short magnetic pin grips in one spot and lets the fabric fan out on either side of it. A four inch bar holds a four inch span of edge flat and square, so the backing stays aligned in the space you place it while you roll.

Because the hold is magnetic, nothing pierces the cloth. No pin holes in the leader, no bent pins on the floor, and no steel points near a moving needle. The two pieces come apart in one motion when you need to reposition, which is what makes creeping fabric a five second fix instead of a reload.

How Magnums compare with the other ways to load

Most longarm quilters have tried three options. Straight pins are cheap and they work, but they are slow, they leave pin holes, and they are difficult if your hands hurt. Zipper leaders and red snappers are fast once fitted, but they are a fixed system you commit to and pay for up front. Plain sewing clips have no reach onto a leader bar. Magnetic pins sit between all of them: no install, no holes, and you can add more to the set whenever you want.

The Longarm League, a community of longarm quilting professionals, recommends them. So do our own customers, and the reason that comes up most in every review is not speed. It is hands. One quilter wrote that she has arthritis in her hands and that pinning a quilt on her longarm was almost impossible, and that loading with SewTites is easier, quicker and less painful. Another called them nice, heavy duty and strong.

An honest note on quantity

Five Magnums is the right package to try them with, and it is enough to hold a section of edge while you find out how you like working. It is not enough to load a full width quilt on a ten or twelve foot frame in one pass. Quilters who load wide tops usually end up wanting more, and one of our reviewers said exactly that after her first quilt. If you already know you load king size tops, check the 20 pack in the keepsake tin instead, which works out cheaper per pin.

Features and benefits

  • Four inch magnetic bar, so a long run of edge is held flat instead of gripped at one point
  • Five rare earth magnets per pin, so the hold survives the tension of rolling a loaded frame
  • No piercing, so your leaders stay free of pin holes and your fingers stay away from pin points
  • Separates in one motion, so repositioning a slipping edge takes seconds
  • Keepsake tin, so five small strong magnets stay together and away from your machine

Great for

  • Loading quilt backing and tops onto a longarm frame
  • Quilters with hand pain, arthritis or limited grip strength
  • Holding beads in place when sewing weighted blankets
  • Bagmaking, where straight pins would mark vinyl, cork or leather, and where a snap or pocket needs holding while you stitch
  • Anywhere a straight pin would leave a hole you do not want
