SewTites Magnum magnetic sewing pins strength comparison chart

At a glance

  • 20 SewTites Magnum magnetic sewing pins in a keepsake tin
  • Each pin measures 3.98" x 0.59" (101 x 15 mm), the longest model SewTites makes
  • Five rare earth magnets on the back of every pin
  • Recommended by the Longarm League for professional longarm quilters
  • Enough Magnums to load a full width quilt in one pass
  • Cheaper per pin than four separate 5 packs

This is the package for quilters who load quilts for a living, or who load enough of them that the 5 pack keeps running out halfway across the frame. Twenty Magnums lay end to end down roughly six and a half feet of edge, which is why longarm quilters working ten and twelve foot frames buy their magnetic sewing pins by the tin.

Why quantity is the whole point

A Magnum is a four inch magnetic bar designed with five rare earth magnets along the back. It holds a four inch span of backing flat and aligned against the leader, with no straight pins and no pin holes. That works beautifully until you run out of pieces two thirds of the way across a king size top and have to start leapfrogging the ones you already placed.

One of our customers put it in one line in her review after her first quilt with the 5 pack. She said she definitely needs to get more for the king size quilts. This is that order, made once.

How Magnums compare with the other ways to load

Straight pins are cheap but slow, they leave pin holes, and they are difficult if your hands hurt. Zipper leaders and red snappers are fast once fitted, but they are a fixed system you pay for up front and commit to. Sewing clips have no reach onto a leader bar. Magnetic pins need no install, leave no holes, and the set grows whenever you want it to. As an alternative that costs nothing to try and nothing to undo, twenty is where most working longarm quilters stop adding.

What you get

  • Twenty pins, so a wide top gets loaded in a single pass instead of leapfrogged
  • Five rare earth magnets per pin, so the hold survives the tension of rolling a loaded frame
  • No piercing, so leaders stay free of pin holes and there are no pin points near the needle
  • Separates in one motion, so a creeping edge is a five second fix
  • Keepsake tin, so twenty strong magnets travel and store as one block, in less space than a pin cushion and away from your machine

Great for

  • Professional longarm quilters loading customer quilts daily
  • Wide backings and king size tops on ten and twelve foot frames
  • Quilters with hand pain or arthritis who cannot pin a full width load
  • Holding beads in place when sewing weighted blankets
  • Bags and pockets in vinyl, cork or leather, where a straight pin leaves a permanent mark and a snap needs holding while you stitch
  • Holding rulers and templates steady on a cutting mat

How to use them

Learn the method in the SewTites video tutorial below. Lay the backing over the leader, place a Magnum every few inches along the edge, and roll. To move one, slide the two halves apart rather than pulling them straight off.

New to the Magnums? The 5 pack is the cheaper option to find out how you like working with them.
