- The knot stays inside. The needle passes through all three layers, comes back up through the very same hole, then travels along inside the sandwich to the next point, so there is never a knot or a thread tail on the surface and the loft is left undisturbed.
- It keeps the quilt puffy. Because nothing is cinched tight on the outside, the batting stays lofty and soft rather than being pulled flat at every tie.
- A tip about fabric that rarely gets shared. Open weave fabrics like flannel, linen and corduroy let the needle slip through and then close up in the wash, and they plump up the most, while quilting cotton is the hardest to pass through and gains the least loft.
