Most beginner quilt tutorials start by sending you shopping. This one starts with what you already have. Karen Brown built it as a stash buster. It is fat quarter friendly, and the pattern is free.
Her video on Just Get it Done Quilts has passed 1.4 million views since 2019, which for a beginner tutorial says something about how well it holds up. Her promise at the top is that the block goes together fast enough to dazzle you. The free pattern link is at the end of the video.
What makes this a good first quilt is that the design does not depend on points meeting. That removes the thing beginners find hardest. You are left free to concentrate on a steady seam and a flat press, which are the habits worth building anyway.
If you want the whole path written out before you start, from choosing fabric through to binding the finished edge, we wrote it: how to make a quilt, a complete step by step guide for beginners.
Credit where it belongs: the tutorial is by Karen Brown, on the Just Get it Done Quilts YouTube channel.
