The whole of foundation paper piecing rests on one sentence, and Leanne of Twin Rock Quilting says it early: you are sewing from the back. The printed side of the paper faces up at the machine, the fabric sits underneath where you cannot see it, and every stitch follows a line you can see while the thing you are joining is out of sight.
That is what makes it feel intimidating, and it is also what makes it accurate. Her advice is to go slowly and start with an easy pattern, and the square in a square is about as easy as a foundation block gets.
Her cutting rule is the part worth stealing. She measures the piece on the printed template, adds half an inch, and cuts to that. A three inch center becomes a three and a half inch square. The two side triangles come from another three and a half inch square cut once on the diagonal, and the outer ones from a five inch square cut the same way. Nothing is measured twice and nothing is calculated.
The second thing worth watching is what she does between pieces. Before adding the next patch she folds the paper back on the line and trims the fabric a quarter inch away from the paper, not from the fabric edge, and she says out loud not to cut the paper. It takes the bulk out of the corner before it can build up, and by the last seam the block still lies flat.
She also keeps holding the work up to the light to check that each piece covers its line before sewing it down. It looks like a small habit and it is the one that saves a block, because a patch that falls short of its line is only visible from behind until it is too late.
The tutorial runs eight minutes and went up in 2026. It ends on the distinction that catches most people the first time: the dotted line is where you cut, and the solid one is the seam that joins this block to the next.
