Three fabrics, almost no yardage, and not a seam in sight on the finished pillowcase. Jennifer Bosworth calls it the coolest pillowcase ever. The hook is that the whole thing closes on itself, so every raw edge ends up hidden inside.
It is also a lesson in picking fabric. She starts from one inspiration print, pulls the accent out of it, then chooses the cuff to sit against both. Three numbers carry the cutting: 3, 9 and 27. The rest is straight sewing.
Her tutorial on Shabby Fabrics has passed 1.7 million views since 2014. Part of that is the trick itself. The rest is that a pillowcase is small enough to finish in an evening, and it still teaches the two things that decide how a quilt looks. Those are how fabrics behave next to each other, and how much a narrow accent strip can do.
If you want to work out why one print sits well beside another before you cut into either, we wrote about it here: how to choose quilt fabric, with value, color and texture explained.
